Edo State Women Association
Edo State Women Association (ESWA) was born out of Benin Union, an informal social group of people from Edo State, Nigeria, living in the UK.
Established in 1991, initially to support development initiatives in Edo State, it later broadened its mandate to include community development initiatives in the UK.
The main aim of ESWA is to improve the economic and social welfare of disadvantaged communities, in particular those originating from Edo State.
ESWA activities in the UK include:
- Women’s Healthy Living programme.
- Recreational Football for young people.
- A mobile catering facility.
- Financial awareness training for young people.
In Nigeria, ESWA runs a successful micro-finance programme for women market traders. The organisation has also constructed a day care centre for children of market traders that is supported from profits made from the micro-finance programme.
The organisation also offers apprenticeship training for young people.
