Afghan Association Paiwand
The Afghan Association Paiwand ("Unity") was formed in August 2002 by to assist refugees from Afghanistan to assimilate into UK society.
It provides a wide range of advice and support services to the community, most of whom live in the boroughs of Brent and Barnet, in respect of health issues, social services, education, counselling, career advice, translation services, welfare support, advocacy and legal issues and the promotion of Afghani arts, culture and traditions, as well as the native Pashto and Farsi languages.
Among those arriving from Afghanistan are unaccompanied young people (aged 16-18). Afghan’s latest project is the provision of supported housing for them, to give them not just accommodation but emotional support, encouragement to engage in voluntary work/daily activities, and creation of a conducive home environment for development of their self-esteem. It provides guidance and advice for development of their vocational skills for enhancement of their earning capacities. The young people will also benefit from Paiwand's many other activities, such as structured training courses, homework club and sport activities.
London Rebuilding Society has lent £50,000 of capital for the project, to enable the renting and furnishing of the accommodation and the recruitment of a project manager.
