African Women’s Care
African Women's Care (AWC) was set up in July 1998 as a self-help group for women living in Brent who had fled from war-torn Uganda.
Most of these women and their families faced multiple disadvantages in accessing social services in the UK and felt socially excluded.
The organisation's main area of focus is refugee women and children experiencing domestic violence. AWC is also increasingly working with victims of trafficking - mainly women involved in prostitution or domestic slavery.
The £40,000 from LRS will be used to establish a loan scheme called Women's Finance, which will support enterprising women who are facing difficulties in securing start-up capital with loans of up to £3,000.
