Building Healthier Communities
Building Healthier Communities (BHC) was set up to promote health, employment and enterprise among the African community in the UK and in Africa.
BHC has a very strong community presence and ably balances community spirit with professionalism. It has in a short period of time, grown from a small volunteer led organisation to one that now employs seven staff and serves up to 800 people a year.
The main activities of BHC are:
- The Building Healthier Communities project, which has been running since April 2006 and provides one to one health advice, a support programme and well being classes.
- Business support and training for start-ups and existing enterprises.
- Activities for young people aged 8 – 19 with a six week summer programme, a home work club, an ICT club and a drop-in centre, which provides one to one support with education and employment. BHC also works with the British Council on an exchange residential programme for youth between the UK and Africa.
- Projects in Africa such as helping deprived schools or community regeneration projects.
BHC’s business support programme currently serves 47 business clients most of whom are BAME women. The organisation recently launched an ambitious enterprise development and support programme called IDEA (Inclusive Development in Enterprise for All).
The project falls under Equal which BHC has been taking part in for three years. The objective of IDEA is to encourage the development of local enterprises through an holistic approach to training, finance and support.
BHC has a loan of £40,000 from LRS.
