SHARE Community Ltd
SHARE is an acronym for Self Help Association for Rehabilitation and Employment for people with disabilities, and was established in Wandsworth in 1972.
It has been at its current premises, 64 Altenburg Gardens, Battersea, since 1982. The building previously had an industrial use, but SHARE has invested tens of thousands of pounds adapting it for use by disabled people. The trustees of SHARE have sought, over a 20-year period, to purchase the freehold interest, to ensure security of occupation, and ultimately reduce accommodation costs. It was only in 2005 that the owners agreed to a sale.
Triodos Bank provided around 80% of the loan finance for the property purchase, and London Rebuilding Society (£100,000) and Co-operative & Community Finance (CCF) provided the balance of the funding required. In September 2007, SHARE was finally able to become the owner of its premises. The organisation can now continue investing in the building, knowing that it has full security of occupation. As the years go by, mortgage costs will decline, enabling SHARE to devote more funds to improvements.
