Inter-Africa Women's Development Organisation

Inter-Africa Women’s Development Organisation is a registered charity, set up in 2001 by a group of African women who wished to address the problems faced by immigrant African women and their families in their struggle to adapt to and integrate into UK society.

IAWDO became a member of the Mutual Aid Fund in 2004, and has now established its own Women's Empowerment Fund with a capital loan of £20,000 from LRS. In this scheme, IAWDO acts as the primary borrower and then lends on smaller amounts to syndicates; at present, WEF has five syndicates each composed of five women. To begin with, the syndicates establish their own internal savings pool from which members can borrow under a revolving scheme; after six months, the syndicate then qualifies for an external loan from IAWDO. In this way, syndicate members build cohesion within their group and learn to trust each other, and also learn how to manage risk by using their own resources.
