Voice Of Africa Radio
Voice Of Africa Radio began broadcasting as a pirate station in January 2000, but was forced off the air while it sought accreditation from Ofcom. Having done so, it has since been successfully broadcasting via its website, www.voiceofafricaradio.com.
Then in 2005 it secured a digital FM licence - the only African station to do so in the UK - and can now also be found on Sky Digital. VOAR is not just about playing African music - its broader remit is 'to inspire, educate and inform', and as such has boasted 600,000 listeners and 1.3 million visitors to its website every month for four years. Based in Newham, VOAR's voice can be heard not only in the UK but also across the African continent and now on SKY Digital No. 0192.
Even big corporations such as the BBC use it as a news update service. It aims to be a truly pan-African voice in London. Not only does the station broadcast all types of African music, it also places a crucial emphasis on the spoken word, broadcasting in a range of African languages, as well as English, French and Portuguese. Its programming content also reflects the kind of IAG (information, advice and guidance) services that other African groups provide, from local and international news, to phone-in discussions with local residents, and Q&A sessions with local councillors.
