Apple Pie Enterprises
Apple Pie Enterprises was founded to provide quality advice, training and opportunities in media (the DJ-ing, radio and music industries) to young people who wish to improve their skills and knowledge.
It is particularly aimed at young people from challenging social and economic backgrounds, especially the unemployed aged between 14 and 24 in the Newham area. Funding from West Ham and Plaistow NDC (New Deal for Communities) in 2002 enabled it to create Break FM, a community radio station and also to set up complementary training provision.
In 2003, it showcased the work of its students by allowing them to make live broadcasts, after which six of them gained full-time employment in commercial media organisations and public broadcasting.
In 2005 APE moved into new office premises and studio space in Stratford. Since then, it has engaged and trained over 554 young people from Newham and 48 students with registered disabilities from New VIC Sixth Form College. It delivers courses accredited by the East London Open College Network, and will offer OCR accreditation by September 2007, which will allow for progression into formal education to study media at BTEC or A-level standard. Most recently, Voice Of Africa Radio has agreed to make APE Media its training arm.
Apple Pie Enterprises has received two loans from LRS. The first (£20,000) was to develop its organisational capacity and expand its training services; the second (£15,000) was to ease a cash flow problem linked to the purchase of new equipment.
