Alpha Grove Community Centre
Alpha Grove Community Trust was established in 1976 to serve its local community in the Millwall area of the Isle of Dogs. In 1981 it acquired an ex-Methodist chapel and hall, as a centre for its activities. The area has been transformed since that time, most notably by the Canary Wharf development, and luxury riverside apartments. However, significant social need remains, and is arguably aggravated by the juxtaposition of great wealth and relative poverty.
The Alpha Grove Community Centre provides training, community development and cultural activities. The Centre is particularly known for its youth work, and its football clubs have won numerous trophies. However, from 2005 trustees have felt that overall use of the premises has not been maximised, in part due to the position of centre manager being vacant.
The voluntary board has wanted to revitalise the Centre, and sought a loan of £30,000 from London Rebuilding Society to help with cash flow, and the funding of a new manager's salary. Rhys Johnson is now in post, and already the Centre has a revived atmosphere of activity, and is attracting the support of grant- providers. The common parts are due to be redecorated, and the future is a promising one.
