New Citizens’ Voice

Maria Leyva-Portilla, a professional radio journalist of Peruvian origin, established New Citizens’ Voice (NCV) in 2003.

Its aim is to assist immigrants from different backgrounds to integrate with each other, and into UK society, by promoting:

i. The use of English as a common language

ii. An understanding of British constitution and politics

iii. The concept of UK citizenship.

NCV delivers its objectives through its website, radio broadcasting, and the organisation of workshops. NVC was run from the director's home in the period 2003-07. However, a loan of £10,000 from LRS has now enabled it to move into rented office premises, and plan for significantly increasing the number of workshops it organises. NVC can also expand its range of services to include one-to-one sessions with immigrants seeking education and careers in the UK, and wishing to pass the 'Citizens Test'. The government is keen to promote both the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, and NVC's growing reputation will enable it to take advantage of the funding opportunities available.
